Jelth K'aan, Debbie McLavey
Haida, Tseeth Janáas, Double-Headed Eagle

Accomplished Haida weaver and regalia maker Jelth K'aan, Debbie McLavey, teaches Northwest Coast art and culture to learners of all ages through Ketchikan Indian Community's Tribal Scholars, apprenticeships, dance groups, classes, and workshops. She has dedicated herself to learning and preserving traditional art forms of the Haida and learned the traditional ways of making regalia, including button robes, octopus bags, moccasins, leather dresses, tunics and aprons, weaving cedar bark, spruce root, Ravenstail, and Chilkat, and spinning merino wool. Debbie McLavey began teaching at the Totem Heritage Center in 2018. Her classes have included cedar bark harvesting, cedar bracelets, moccasins, and high top moccasins.

This cedar bark hat is woven with red and yellow cedar bark, dyed red and blue. The central band is woven with the "diamond's eye" design, while the upper and lower bands are woven with the "chase" design. Debbie made this hat along with a new robe and pair of moccasins for her grandson to wear at his high school graduation in 2021.
"I began teaching Native art classes at Kayhi [Ketchikan High School] in 2014. At this point in my life I need to be teaching and sharing information about everything I know - to pass it on to the next generation. I have nothing but fun when I teach. I believe in laughter as you're learning."
