Description:
Woolen-Tassel Earrings, 2022
Stacey N. Williams
Tlingit, Raven - Dog Salmon Clan

These earrings are made from materials created during the Chilkat Material Prep class taught by Dorica Jackson in 2022. The earrings are made from Chilkat warp and wrapped with yarn dyed during the class.
"These types of earrings appear in legends across the Northwest Coast. Stories of Mouse Woman in Haida Gwaii tell of young spirited youths who get into trouble and are able to fix the balance by working with the tiny narnauk. After receiving help, the youths gave a gift of woolen tassel earrings.

The legends state that the youths tossed the earrings into the fire to be transformed into their essence. Because Mouse Woman is a spirit being, she should have let any gifts be transformed into their essence by fire for her to use. But, the mouse in Mouse Woman is so strong that sometimes before woolen gifts were completely burned, she would snatch them out of the fire and tear them into a loose pile of unraveled wool."
